The Happening - SPOILERS

Jenns Paranormal Corner
Jenns Paranormal Corner

Deadframe writes "Far be it from me to pass up on a supernatural thriller. For this reason, M. Night Shyamalan is one of my favorite directors. With the exception of Unbreakable, his films have always impressed me. (I'm just not into the whole super hero scene.)

I couldn't figure out why The Happening was receiving such critical press. I wasn't one of the angry fans who left the theater pissed off because there was no monster after all in The Village. I appreciated The Lady in the Water for its story-telling and imagery. This morning my husband and I decided we would make our own judgments once again.

*SPOILERS AHEAD*

The concept of a biological threat to mankind is very realistic and could have conceivably been quite frightening. Unfortunately for me, it didn't work in this film. I understand that fiction sometimes requires suspension of belief, but even then there seemed to be large gaps in the plot. If the toxins released by these plants affect our neurological system, wouldn't we simply behave erratically? I can see falling off of roof tops (accidentally) or speaking incoherently. I can even see driving into a few trees. But to intentionally find a means of suicide would require even a small amount of lucidity, not to mention cognitive thinking...which you supposedly just lost. So you lose enough congition to stop walking and speaking but not enough to refrain from killing yourself. What?

I truly do admire Shyamalan and think he has undeniable talent when it comes to creating suspense. He's good at leading you down the primrose path, only to suddenly venture off in the opposite direction into a dark and chaotic world. I also appreciate the strong environmental message in this film - Continue to abuse the planet and Mother Nature will strike back with a vengeance. I just don't think he came close to the mark with this latest effort. Though some of the imagery is very disturbing, The Happening doesn't leave a lasting impression...though it could make you reconsider buying another Fica for your living room.

The Reaping - movie review

Jenns Paranormal Corner
Jenns Paranormal Corner

Deadframe writes "The Reaping is a supernatural thriller about unexplained phenomena occurring in a small Gulf town. Everything about these occurrences seems to scream of the Biblical plagues: Water turned to blood, Locust swarms, Frogs falling from the sky, Flies, Lice, etc. (And you thought West Nile was scary!)

Hillary Swank plays a former Christian missionary who is sent to figure out a possible scientific explanation for the strange events. What she ultimately finds is even more bizarre.

Jenn's Thoughts
So I was lazy and didn't make it to the theatre in time to see this on the big screen. I think it would have been much more impressive if I had. The film had a lot of promise and some really cool special effects. I didn't find it scary, not even remotely, but the visuals were a bit off-putting. Halfway through the movie, it seemed that the ending was extremely obvious. However, I think Hillary Swank did a nice acting job and it carried the film through.

I give it 2.5 out of 5 spooks!

First Born - DVD Release 2007 review

Jenns Paranormal Corner
Jenns Paranormal Corner

Deadframe writes "
First Born features Elisabeth Shue as Laura, an expectant mother plagued with the typical insecurities of being a first time parent. She and her husband move to a house in the country to allow room for their expanding family. Soon things begin to change for Laura..she begins hearing sounds within the walls of their bedroom. A doll she found on the subway and brought to their new home seems to move around the house. After giving birth, things progressively decline as Laura begins losing track of her newborn and experiencing anxiety attacks. When her husband hires a nanny to help out around the house, Laura becomes convinced that she is there to hurt her baby. Everything culminates into a shocking resolution.

Jenn's Thoughts

This movie definitely has plenty of twists and turns. It takes the condition of PostPartum Depression to a whole new level. There are some spooky moments, and the ending of the film is downright disturbing. I do not recommend this film to anyone who has dealt with PPD as it may be very unsettling to watch.

I give this film 3 out of 5 spooks!"

Pan's Labyrinth - Movie Review

Jenns Paranormal Corner
Jenns Paranormal Corner

Deadframe writes "It's no wonder this film has six academy award nominations. Pan's Labyrinth is a film that truly lives up to its accolades.

The movie takes place in post WWII Spain. An Army general has brought his new, pregnant wife and her twelve year old child, Ofelia, to his compound in the woods. Ofelia becomes bored and wanders into the forest, only to find a labyrinth (maze) made of crumbling stone. As she makes her way further inside, she meets a satyr named Pan. He explains that she is actually the princess of the Underworld, and that she has three tasks to complete by the next full moon.

Jenn's thoughts

I know I didn't divulge much information, and there is a LOT more, trust me, but this film is so wonderful that I don't want to give anything more away. This movie is entirely in Spanish so there are subtitles, but I honestly don't feel it deviates from the storyline. I thoroughlly enjoyed this movie and the message it sends. There are some violent scenes involving the Army Captain but not in a Saw fashion.

I give this ten spooks!!!
